A theory by Hancock and Beauval...

Today, we are still wondering how those gigantic stone building were constructed. When Napoleon, the French emperor, came to Egypt, he tried to calculate how many stone had been used to build the pyramids and he concluded that they were enough stones in the pyramid to build a wall around the French borders!

The Great pyramids

Several theories have been imagined for the construction of those giants but no one yet has found the final answer. The pyramids in Giza are totally anonymous, there are no inscriptions inside like in the other pyramids. Why would a pharaoh have spent so much time and money in building such a monument without leaving any trace of his name somewhere?

The stones used for the building came from the South of Egypt by boat. They were then pulled on wooden trunk. The precision of the building is outstanding and some rocks are so heavy that even a crane today could rise them. How could they rise them without cranes?

The pyramid has a triangular shape with an angle of 51° for each side. How could they be that precise at that time? Egyptologists pretend they didn't try to have an angle of 51°, it's only a pure coincidence! Inside the pyramid, you have three chambers. The lowest chamber is below the ground level of the pyramid and we don't know why it was built. Then we have the Queen's chamber and the King's chamber. In the two last chambers, there are two small corridors leaving the chamber which lead outside. The corridors in the King's chamber lead directly to the outside part of the pyramid. In the Queen chamber's, it's not the same. A German engineer conceived a little robot able to make his way in those mysterious corridors. After lots of problems, the robot finally reached the end of the corridor which was blocked by a door.
A door? Yes, it could mean there is still a chamber behind that door which hasn't been explored so far. Hancock and Bauval suggest it could contain some ancient documents about the vanished civilisation mentioned above.

With computer-aided technology, Hancock and Beauval discovered that the corridors leaving the chambers were exactly pointing two stars: Orion and Sirius, the two most important stars in the Egyptian sky. Don't forget that the pyramid are huge piles of stones in which small and perfect corridors have been carved pointing to the stars!

A Mysterious wall:

Ramses II's father, carved the history of Ancient Egypt on the wall of a corridor. He shows who ruled Egypt from the first pharaoh to the last one, himself. That's what the left wall shows. What about the right wall? It describes who ruled Egypt before the first pharaoh when Egypt was still ruled by the Gods. Who were those Gods?

The Great Sphynx

The enormous statue of a lion with a human face is looking in the same direction as the 30th parallel. The centuries passed by, the climate changed, religion changed, languages changed, even the position of the stars changed but the Sphinx remained the same.

The face of the Sphinx seems to represent pharaoh Khafre (or Chephren), ruler of Egypt from 2520-2494 BC. Egyptologists have compared the only statue of Khafre we have today with the face of the Sphinx and they realised there were some similarities. So they concluded that the Sphinx had been built under the rule of pharaoh Khafre. There is no way to date the Sphinx with certainty and that's why everybody accepted what the Egyptologists had discovered.

Mark Lehner, professor of oriental languages at the University of Chicago, published an article in National Geographic (in 91) which proved that the face of the Sphinx was indeed the face of Khafre. Therefor he used computers to reconstruct the face of the Sphinx. The problem is that he first used Khafre's face as a model, so it's obvious that he came to the conclusion that the face of the Sphinx and the Khafre's face were the same. If he had used Elvis Presley's face as a model, he would have concluded that the Sphinx was a representation of the dead singer.

During thousands of years, the body of the Sphinx has been covered by sand while its head was still watching the sun. Anyone could carve the face because it stood nearly at ground level.

Hancock and Beauval say that the Sphinx has been built a long time before the 4th dynasty (Khafre). When you have a look at the head of the Sphinx, it's obvious that the head is too small in comparison with the rest of the body. The original head was much bigger and the actual "Egyptian" face has been carved later on. In 1993, Frank Domingo began to analyse the face of the Sphinx. Frank Domingo is a specialist in facial analysis for the police of New York. His conclusions were that the Sphinx and Khafre were two different persons. His conclusions were totally opposed to Lehner's theory. Who was right? The Sphinx is really a riddle because it can't be dated by C14 techniques and there are no inscriptions which proves it has been built during the 4th dynasty. We can say the Sphinx is completely anonymous!

Lehner says that there is one syllable ('Khaf') carved between the front legs of the Sphinx and this proves that it has been built under the reign of Khafre. But 'Khaf' doesn't mean anything because the names of the pharaohs were always written in closed cartouches. And even if that syllable had been carved by Khafre, it doesn't mean he built the Sphinx. It could simply mean that Khafre repaired the Sphinx and gave his face to it. Another carved rock from that period has been found and it shows that Cheops had already seen the Sphinx. Cheops was born before Khafre which means that Khafre couldn't have built the Sphinx.

Some facts about the Sphynx:

The erosion.
Now it's time for geology to date the Sphinx. John Anthony West, an independent American researcher, pretends that the Sphinx is much older than what we think. It has been built 12000 years ago. How did he conclude this ? He has had a look at the body of the Sphinx and he spotted trace of water erosion. Water in the desert ? Yes, water. The climate in Egypt hasn't been humid for 12000 years. The erosion is not the result of a flooding because the erosion shows clearly that the water came from the sky. If flooding had caused the erosion, the lower part of the Sphinx should also show signs of erosion which is not the case. According to West, it rained on the Sphinx.... 12000 years ago!

The hidden chamber:
Since the 70s, radar and other sophisticated machines have probed the ground around the Sphinx. Each time, experts discovered "holes" in the ground below the Sphinx and the causeway between the Sphinx and the pyramids. "hole" means there is possibly a room hidden under the Sphinx. Egyptian authorities have always been reluctant up to now, they've always refused to dig the ground to see if those "holes" where built by men or simply natural. It seems that the situation is changing now, the pyramids will be closed for six months this year. It's the first time in six years it happens. It means that the Egyptian authorities will, perhaps, dig the ground to discover if there is really something hidden under the Sphinx.

The origin of the Sphynx:
Who could have built the Sphinx if the Egyptians didn't build it ? Some pretend it has been built by a pre-Egyptian civilisation which we call today "Atlantis". This civilisation would have disappeared after a gigantic cataclysm on Earth. There would also be an ancient library under the Sphinx containing evidences of that vanished civilisation. If such documents are found, well ... we'll have to rewrite history!
